Expertise: I joined the Canberra Police Force (as a teenage cop) shortly after completing my NSW Leaving Certificate in 1964.  Within two years I was called up for National Service.  I was selected for officer training and attended the Officer Training Unit, Scheyville graduating in April, 1968 as a Second Lieutenant.  I served in Vietnam during 1970-71.  On my return to Australia I applied for a permanent commission and served with the Australian Regular Army until 1990.  My family and I moved to Cairns where I served with 51 Battalion, the Far North Queensland Regiment in the Army Reserve initially as Company Commander, Administration Company, then as Company Commander, A Company finishing in 1995 as Battalion 2IC.  On moving to Cairns I joined the staff of Cairns Airport where I remained for 21 years. 

During my time with Cairns Airport I was on the management team responsible for extensions to the International Terminal Building and for the redevelopment of the Domestic Terminal, among other things.

Expressions of Interest, contact negotiations, project management, developing key performance indicators, writing manuals and representing the airport's position at aviation security and emergency planning forums nationally were part of my responsibilities during my time at the airport. 

I resigned from my position at the airport in 2011 and established and operated a consultancy for the next five years dealing mainly with regional airports and the Federal Government's Office of Transport security. My main interests presently centre around golf, reading military history, the RSL and grandchildren.  

Treasurer Ben Hemphill

Expertise: Not an accountant by any stretch of the imagination, but have sound business management skills.  Working in the corporate world, I have been exposed to new leadership and management experiences and believe that these are beneficial to the Sub-Branch. The aim is to keep the Sub-Branch fulfilling its key PAWS business and ensure the longevity of the Sub-Branch financially

Expertise: Background in nursing, currently working in rehabilitation consultant role for Defence.  Expertise in assisting Veterans in return to work, medical discharge, looking after complex cases, mental health. 

Director of Admin Peter Blackburn

Service: Army - National Service

Service Period: 1968 - 1970

Expertise: I have extensive experience in the hospitality industry with various management responsibilities in medium to large four-star hotels.  I've spent over 25 years as a general manager (GM)- including hotels in Cairns and Perth. 

Following my discharge from the Army rehabilitation was offered, and this is where my formal hospitality qualifications were gained. I've also completed the following: Summer school at Cornell University, New York- Specialist Hospitality Studies; Holiday Inn University - The General Manager Property Executive Training, which included the Cornell University "CHASE" program; University of Hong Kong -  "Mini MBA" - a specially designed program for Holiday Inn which was a two-year part time course.

Other qualifications/positions include: Commissioner of Declarations; Past chairman- North Qld Residential Division; Board member- Australian Hotels Association; Past director of Cairns Region Group Training; Past President and Committee Member of SKAL International.
