SUPPORT & WELFARE
Cairns RSL Sub Branch offers a wide range of support and welfare services for all current and former service personnel and their families.
We have ten trained/authorised welfare officers who offer welfare services five days per week with a mechanism to cover emergency cases out of hours if necessary. These officers can assist with the sourcing of home help, respite, and medical assistance, emergency/short term/long term accommodation in the case of a homeless person, nursing home placements, transport, Enduring Powers of Attorney or any other service which is required by our clients. We also do welfare visits to clients in their own homes and in nursing homes.
In addition, we have a volunteer who visits the local hospitals one day per week. This allows us to ensure that members who are hospitalised have access to any services which they may require as well as some social interaction, bearing in mind that many are socially isolated with no family support.
Because we have a wide network of local service providers, we are able to refer our members to the appropriate agency to enable them to access the service they require if we are unable to assist. As well we also have an excellent relationship with Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) officers and this facilitates the work we do.
